At Linkfire, boards and workspaces follow a family tree logic. Just like child boards can inherit settings from a parent board, a Workspace also inherits selected settings from the board it was created from.
This guide explains how that inheritance works—what gets passed down, what can be changed, and how to make sure your Workspaces are set up right from the start.
Inheritance Basics: Boards as a Family Tree
In Linkfire, parent boards pass down settings to their children. These inherited elements are locked at the child level and cannot be removed—though child boards can add additional items on top.
Example: Channels
- If your parent board has channels configured, any child board will show those channels as locked.
- You can add more channels in the child board, but can’t remove what came from the parent.
Example: User Permissions
- Users added to a parent board automatically gain access to all its child boards.
- You can still add more users directly to a child board—they will only see that one.
How This Works for Workspaces
When you create a Workspace, it behaves like a child of the board you launched it from. The Workspace will inherit the following settings:
Setting |
Behavior in Workspace |
|---|---|
| Channels | Inherited and locked. You can add more, but not remove inherited ones. |
| User Access | Inherited from the parent board. You can add additional workspace-only users. |
| Integrations | Inherited and locked. Workspace inherits any integrations set up at board level. You can add more, but not remove inherited ones. |
What About Board Services?
In addition to inheritance, the Workspace will also clone your Board Service settings at the time of creation. Unlike inheritance:
- These settings are not locked.
- You can freely adjust them after the workspace is created.
Which Board Will Be the Parent?
When you click “Create Workspace” from the Home menu, the board you select from the dropdown becomes its parent board by default. That means:
- If you want your Workspace to inherit specific settings—like channels, integrations, or permissions, make sure you start from your main parent board.
- Workspaces created from secondary boards may not include the correct integrations or default settings, so double-check your starting point.
- In case you choose an incorrect parent board, please reach out to help@linkfire.com and one of our support agents will be ready to change it for you in the back-end.
Can I Change These Settings Later?
- Inherited items (channels, users, integrations) are locked by design to maintain consistency.
- Cloned settings (Board Services) can be changed freely inside the Workspace.
If you need to change an inherited setting, you’ll need to update it at the parent board level and create a new Workspace.
Tips for Clean Inheritance
- Set up a dedicated parent board as your “template” for Workspaces.
- Configure channels, integrations, and base user roles here.
- Always start Workspace creation from this board to keep things consistent.
